Score: 318
Genre: R&B Ballad

HwaYobi6Music: Lee Sang Joon / Lyrics: Hwa Yobi
Album: Hwa Yobi Vol. 6 Track 3 Purchase this album
Watch: MV Live Performance
Comment: Title song from Hwa Yobi’s 6th album “Sunshine”. It marks the return of the singer after her vocal cord surgery. Hwa Yobi has always been highly regarded as one of the best female vocalists in Korea. This is perhaps the most listener-friendly song that Hwa Yobi has ever produced, and it has a good early showing on the charts. The song is emotional enough to fit her vocals but not exaggerated. Hwa Yobi admits that she’s trying to appeal more to the masses now, and she’s more actively performing on gayo shows, which was a rare scene in the past. This is a highly recommended song.

Their “Superstar” might have hit No. 1 on some charts before, but this song earned general consensus as a No. 1 hit in Korea, therefore earning a very high 961 points this week. Female groups are doing very well in the first quarter of 2008 – we already saw No. 1 songs from See Ya, SNSD, Brown Eyed Girls, and now Jewelry hitting No. 1.

Monthly Top 10 K-pop Album Sales: February 2008

Posted in entertainment, kpop, music on March 18, 2008 by kpopworld

For the second month of the year, Kim Dong Ryul has yet to slide from his position. He is still going on strong and has a lead of 8,000 copies over Sweet Sorrow, who are in second spot and are known for their numerous soundtrack hits. In third spot, we have a group that seem to never leave the charts. Big Bang are holding strong with their new live album and their second mini-album (#5) released late last year. It’s surprising to see the group still charting so well with the release since it is quite old. Another group that can’t get off the charts is So Nyuh Shi Dae, who released their smash album in early November last year. It wouldn’t be surprising to see sales of the album climb even higher as they have scheduled a repackaged version to be released quite soon.

Jewelry have made quite a comeback, with their song, One More Time, already steaming up the charts. At 7 is Davichi, a relatively new group who have been getting quite a lot of attention due to their high-budget music video starring Lee Hyori and Lee Mi Yeon. After a long wait, SS501 fans will be happy with the boyband’s brand new single. They have been away for quite a while promoting in Japan, so hopefully they haven’t been totally forgotten. Gummy’s new album is cooking up a storm and will probably gain more sales as the principal track becomes more heavily promoted. Lastly, Ha Dong Kyun of Wanted is still hitting the charts. The promotional track for his album, Butterfly, has been steadily climbing the charts.

It is such a good turnaround for the 4-member female group, after their 2nd album last year fell short of expectations despite a strong debut. Now they have finally redeemed themseleves and in the process, perhaps found the niche of music that works for them.

Comment: Our highest debut this week is the latest hit by the 4-member singing group, Sweet Sorrow. We might have known them better in drama OSTs, such as the OSTs of “War of Money” and “Alone In Love”. Now they are releasing their 2nd studio album, which is already doing much better than their debut album. Like their name suggests, their songs are sad but they perform them with sweet harmony.

Album: Mighty Mouth digital single “I Love You”
Watch: MV Live Performance (feat. JJ)
Comment: Besides Joo and Davichi, this is another new act in 2008 that has successfully debuted. Hip-hop duo Mighty Mouth has the 2nd highest debut this week with “I Love You”. Perhaps the popularity of this song is due in large part to the featured vocals of ex-Baby Vox member Yoon Eun Hye, who has gone on to become a very successful actress. This song marks the return of Yoon to the music scene, even though she’s not performing on stage with Mighty Mouth. Female singer JJ is currently performing the vocal parts of this song instead.

20. (New) Park Hye Kyung – 사랑과 우정사이 (Between Love and Friendship)
Score: 251
Genre: Pop Ballad

ParkHyeKyungRemakeMusic + Lyrics: Oh Tae Ho
Album: Park Hye Kyung Remake Album “When A Woman Falls In Love” Track 3 Purchase this album
Watch: MV Live Performance
Comment: This song is from Park Hye Kyung’s special remake album “When A Woman Falls In Love”. “Between Love And Friendship” is a wonderful love song about the feelings between friends who turn into lovers. Pinocchio originally sang this song and Park Hye Kyung did a great remake by giving a different style and emotion to the song. Lee Soo Young also remade this song on her “Classic” Remake Album. But Park’s version is with a totally different arrangement to fit her laid-back style vocal. Park Hye Kyung usually won’t appear on too many gayo shows, but is seen actively promoting this song now.
